Twitter. Twitter. Twitter. The world loves Twitter. Parents of today’s youth see this social networking platform is the enemy. It’s either they are yelling about how it drains the brain or other times they are insisting that the lack of self esteem in the youth derives from this platform. But Twitter has a purpose, not only for the typical socializing but oddly enough for marketing. Yes, at first glance Twitter is just a bunch of rants and life updates from the younger generations but oddly enough on Twitter today, some of the things it is known for is the constant and yet entertaining companies that take over the site. For example, Wendy’s is a huge fast food chain that takes to twitter for humorous jokes, trolling, and promotions. Even though these posts are entertaining, these posts are part of the companies marketing strategy. They promote companies, and make the World Wide Web aware that they are alive and well. This is typically the way companies like Wendy’s get through to the younger generation.
Within the last couple of years, instead of just socializing Twitter has become part of the communication path for important events in our day to day lives. Back in 2011, there was a Revolution in Egypt that many would say required Twitter for it to work. “We use Facebook to schedule the protests, Twitter to coordinate, and YouTube to tell the world,” Fawaz Rashed, a protestor said. This quote along shows how people in Egypt used what they knew the government couldn’t take away from them to ban together and over through the power they no longer wanted in office.
Now Twitter has already been identified above as a marketing tool and revolutionary tool but now what about political tool? With the atmosphere our political climate is in, Twitter has become huge. Especially, with the last election back in 2016, which some might say was historically one of the most controversial presidential elections in our history, people took to twitter to voice their opinion. Not only did the pedestrian audience take to Twitter but so did our current president. With President Donald Trump’s campaign came his very untraditional way of communicating with the media, Twitter. There is where he tweeted his opinions, combatted what he considered “fake news”, and presented information to the world. Unsurprisingly, after President Trump’s openness on twitter, the rest of the political world followed suit. Today, Twitter has daily political “wars” between parties that do not agree on topics.
Essence magazine is a key player in the magazine industry that plays a huge part in the African American beauty and lifestyle industry. Their Twitter is a place for people who aspire to work in the magazine industry, whether it be to write or photograph, style or more. The radio version of Essence magazine could be considered Power 105.1. Power 105.1 is a New York City radio station that focuses on the needs of the african american community, but unlike quite a few of the other african american aimed radio shows, this ones gives the community newsworthy information as well instead of just the everyday gossip. Those are things that not every radio station can pull off but should be able to. Now in contrast to those two would be Tomi Lahren. This a woman who is very loud with her opinions but is extremely close minded. She is a person that is not open to others views and tends to shun and discriminate against people for having views against her own. On twitter, she is a key person to follow to open one’s world of views. It is importance to live in a world that is surrounded with views unlike the ones common to the environment. That is how a person becomes open minded.
Twitter can be broken down into imaginary parts. One of those sections in called, what many might call, “Black Twitter”. Here is where, one might find information on Black Lives Matter Movements, Police Brutality issues, and other cultural issues in the black community. Though this topic has been of importance for more than 12 months, one thing has been consistent the entire time and that is their social media presence. Black Twitter stands up and promotes Black Lives Matter harder than any other community on twitter seen before. Just like in the Egyptian Revolution, black twitter is also used to coordinate protests and rallies all throughout the nation.
Within the last two weeks, twitter was drowned with ads, rants, opinions, etc. about the midterm elections last tuesday November 6. Twitter was used to spread information on known candidates, educate people on how to sign up to vote, and on how to find or determine their voting station. As a huge event within the last year, millennials took to twitter to promote voting so that they may try to fix the current political climate. Days leading up to the elections, pedestrians and celebrities alike took to Twitter to educate the World Wide Web on election laws in the country. In the end, may would says this form of communication for this event would be a success since there was history made in several different ways in the results alone. Just like the views of the millennials, women, african americans, and the LGBTQ community took several wins that same evening.
In California, recently there have been huge wildfires, that have been tearing through rural areas of the famous city. Celebrities have been taking to twitter to inform their fans of the intensity of the fire and where the fire is located. This in turn has been helping save the people in the surrounding areas since the fire is moving so quickly. Then there are the hundreds of posts daily since the fire started about the need for supplies at fire stations. This is leading people in the community to commit acts of kindness and making them aware of the desperate need of help in the community. Lastly, with this same event, firefighters have been getting the praise that they deserved all along for fighting fires such as this one. People are taking to Twitter to show their appreciation for the fire department in the area.
Twitter is extremely different from blogging for several reasons. Blogging can be thought of as a place to express views to the heart’s content. These posts tend to be longer in length and more into detail. With Twitter, the main difference is that the readers must get the point in a short amount of time and space. Now compared to other social media sites Twitter has more in common but is still quite different. For example, the usage of hashtags on twitter is an extremely popular way to get posts liked and retweeted quickly. Twitter over all if a place full of excitement and action constantly.
